Parks, places and spaces
As there is no longer a youth centre in Ramsbottom, youth workers are out working in parks, public places and spaces around the area. They are meeting with young people to gather their ideas and suggestions regarding what facilities and amenities they would like to see developed locally in there area.
Without a youth centre, the social spaces available for young people to use in their community are predominantly parks and open spaces. Increasingly groups of young people from across the area are informing youth workers of their ideas for improvements to the spaces to make them more appropriate for their needs.
Youth workers are trying to respond to this situation by supporting young people to develop their ideas and with support of partner agencies such as the Park Rangers, take action to realise them.
We hope to keep you informed of ideas for your parks. Anyone interested in any of the below please contact Dawn or Catherine on 0161-253-5392 / 0161-253-6149 or email youthservice@bury.gov.uk.

Park meetings
Young people with fun and creative ideas for their parks are encouraged to attend the ‘Friends of the Park’ meetings, organised by the Park Rangers. Most parks have a regular ‘Friends of the Park’ meeting. Details of these meetings will posted on this website and youth workers will support young people to attend them and present their ideas. Alternatively go along to your park and ask your Park Ranger for further details.
Hartley Gardens – Walmersley
Young people have access to a ballzone in Hartley Gardens. However, there is an issue regarding their ability to use the facility in the winter months as there is no lighting of the facility.
Young people living in Walmersley have informed youth workers that their priority for the park is obtaining lighting in the ballzone so that they can use the facility after school and early evenings in winter as they do in summer.
The Area Youth Action Group are looking at supporting a bid for funding the lighting of the ballzone as without this facility young people in Walmersley have no other recreational facilities or amenities available for them to use.
Peel Brown - Ramsbottom
Development of Ramsbottom’s newest play-site located on Peel Brow is well under way and due for completion.
The previously under-used land between Fern Street and Kenyon Street will soon be transformed into a brand new child friendly play area that encourages imaginative and natural play.
The site was designed by young people in the area who drew inspiration after a visit to the Tatton Park flower show, and after finding a garden they liked they teamed up with Matt Unwin a landscape designer to create an exiting and completely original open space for their community.
Bury Youth Service is delighted to announce that there will be an official opening day to celebrate the new site on the, the details are still being finalised with partner agencies so watch this space for full info, but rest assured it will be a great day out for the whole family to enjoy.
