Youth centres

Bury North Area Youth Service (Previously Ramsbottom Youth Centre)

Women's Group at Ramsbottom youth club

Parks, places and spaces

As there is no longer a youth centre in Ramsbottom, youth workers are out working in parks, public places and spaces around the area. They are meeting with young people to gather their ideas and suggestions regarding what facilities and amenities they would like to see developed locally in there area.

Without a youth centre, the social spaces available for young people to use in their community are predominantly parks and open spaces. Increasingly groups of young people from across the area are informing youth workers of their ideas for improvements to the spaces to make them more appropriate for their needs.

Youth workers are trying to respond to this situation by supporting young people to develop their ideas and with support of partner agencies such as the Park Rangers, take action to realise them.

We hope to keep you informed of ideas for your parks below.

In your park

Park meetings

Young people with fun and creative ideas for their parks are encouraged to attend the ‘Friends of the Park’ meetings, organised by the Park Rangers. Most parks have a regular ‘Friends of the Park’ meeting. Details of these meetings will posted on this website and youth workers will support young people to attend them and present their ideas. Alternatively go along to your park and ask your Park Ranger for further details.

Hartley Gardens – Walmersley

Young people have access to a ballzone in Hartley Gardens. However, there is an issue regarding their ability to use the facility in the winter months as there is no lighting of the facility.

Young people living in Walmersley have informed youth workers that their priority for the park is obtaining lighting in the ballzone so that they can use the facility after school and early evenings in winter as they do in summer.

The Area Youth Action Group are looking at supporting a bid for funding the lighting of the ballzone as without this facility young people in Walmersley have no other recreational facilities or amenities available for them to use.

Anyone wanting to be involved with the project to look at the lighting of the ballzone is encouraged to contact Dawnon 0161-253-5392 / 0161-253-6149 or email youthservice@bury.gov.uk.

Peel Brown - Ramsbottom

Development of Ramsbottom’s newest play-site located on Peel Brow is well under way and due for completion by June 1st 2010.
The previously under-used land between Fern Street and Kenyon Street will soon be transformed into a brand new child friendly play area that encourages imaginative and natural play.
The site was designed by young people in the area who drew inspiration after a visit to the Tatton Park flower show, and after finding a garden they liked they teamed up with Matt Unwin a landscape designer to create an exiting and completely original open space for their community.
Bury Youth Service is delighted to announce that there will be an official opening day to celebrate the new site on the 4th June 2010, the details are still being finalised with partner agencies so watch this space for full info, but rest assured it will be a great day out for the whole family to enjoy.

Anyone wanting to be involved with the project is encouraged to contact Dawn on 0161-253-5392 / 0161-253-6149 or email youthservice@bury.gov.uk.

Bolton Road West - Ramsbottom

The Area Youth Action Group have successfully applied for funding for the lighting of the ballzone in the park. The lighting is currently being installed and the project is due for completion at the end of March 2009.

Youth workers are currently working with the Play Rangers to organise an official opening event and develop a programme of activities to celebrate the last of the long dark winter nights!

Anyone wanting to be involved with developing the opening event or wanting to try a specific sport in the ballzone once the lighting is operating is encouraged to contact Dawn on 0161-253-5392 / 0161-253-6149 or email youthservice@bury.gov.uk.

Bury Lions Carnival Parade

This year’s Bury Lions Carnival Parade and Gala takes place on 12 June, and Team Bury partners are supporting it and working with Bury Lions Club in an effort to make it make it a bigger and better event. It links into the work we are undertaking to promote Bury as a tourist and shopping destination. There are some big surprises in store……….

Bury Lions are looking for people and groups to take part – this could be:

  • A performing band .
  • A dance group.
  • A theatre group.
  • A group which can build a float.
  • A local community group which wants to showcase what it does.
  • Or another aspect, group, or performance which allows us to promote what is good about the borough of Bury.

We hope to double the amount of Carnival entries and help raise more money for Bury Lions, who work to support worthy causes and charities in the local community.

Entries are invited from groups and businesses from across the borough of Bury, and beyond, and each entry costs just £10 for non-commercial, and £20 for commercial. All revenue goes to Bury Lions Club, for redistribution to worthy causes.

If you want to take part, please email communications@bury.gov.uk or burylionsclub@hotmail.co.uk, or telephone Bury Lions on 0845 833 9608 to request application forms and further information about the Carnival.

You can also log on to www.burylionsclub.org.uk to find out more about the work of Bury Lions, and the plans for this year’s Carnival.
